Family coordination

A caregiver checklist for the first conversation with your siblings

5 min readUpdated October 2026

The first family conversation about a parent's care sets the tone for years. Going in with a short agenda keeps it practical and fair.

01

Start with what your parent wants

Before dividing tasks, agree on what your parent has said about where they want to live and what help they're open to. Include them when you can.

02

Cover the four basics

  • Roles: who calls, who visits, who handles paperwork
  • Money: who pays for what, and how it's tracked
  • Communication: one shared place for updates
  • Emergencies: who is called first, and who has authority to decide

03

Expect different capacities

Distance, jobs and kids change what each sibling can do. Fair doesn't mean equal; it means everyone contributes something real.

04

End with a date

Close the meeting by scheduling the next one. Plans change, and a standing check-in keeps small frustrations from building.

Sibling meeting agenda

  • What has Mom or Dad said they want?
  • Who takes which days for calls?
  • Who handles appointments and medications?
  • How are costs shared?
  • Where do we post updates?
  • Who is the emergency contact?
  • When do we meet again?

How Porchlight helps
